The days when cow&#8217;s milk was the only option for coffee are long gone.<\/em> For health, ethical, or ecological reasons, more and more coffee lovers are switching to plant-based milk alternatives.<\/p><p><em>Measured in terms of products sold, the market for plant-based milk has actually grown by 48% since 2020, while the market for cow&#8217;s milk has shrunk by 12%.*<\/em><\/p><p>You are almost overwhelmed by the huge selection when you stand in front of the shelf at the grocery store. Great on the one hand. But each of these milk alternatives has different characteristics &#8211; from its own taste to its consistency and foam. <em>And you need to know them in order to make your perfect coffee.<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-462bdd4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"462bdd4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The most important plant milks - what they can do and how they taste.<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3153721 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"3153721\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Oat milk.<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-67a44d7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"67a44d7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><em><strong>At 66%, it is currently the most popular milk alternative and there is a reason for this:<\/strong> Its taste is slightly sweet and subtly cereal-like.<\/em> The consistency is creamy and similar to cow&#8217;s milk. In what is known as barista quality, it is excellent for frothing and forms a fine-pored, stable foam. <em>Actually perfect for a <strong>cappuccino, latte, or flat white.<\/strong><\/em><\/p><p><em><strong>However, oat milk<\/strong> is not really the first choice for anyone who doesn&#8217;t like their coffee specialty sweet or sweetish.<\/em> Personally, I find it too voluminous in the mouth and too heavy with 7% carbohydrates. But fortunately, that&#8217;s a matter of taste. <em>Otherwise, <strong>oat milk<\/strong> harmonizes well with pretty much all types of beans &#8211;<\/em> especially the strong Robusta blends. For me personally, however, it would be a little too dominant for an elegant, refined Arabica.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1100b8f elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"1100b8f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Soy milk.<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a67c529 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a67c529\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Probably the best known and <em>\u201coldest\u201d<\/em> plant milk.<\/strong> Its taste is quite neutral, sometimes a little \u201cbeany\u201d. Its consistency is also creamy and similar to cow&#8217;s milk, which makes it particularly versatile.<em> It is also super easy to froth, which makes it ideal for <strong>cappuccinos, lattes, and flat whites<\/strong>.<\/em> It goes particularly well with strong coffees and dark roasts such as our Arabica Crema or Barista Espresso, as it does not dominate the taste.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8a83bbe elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"8a83bbe\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Almond milk.<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-68ebe75 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"68ebe75\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><em><strong>It is characterized by its nutty aroma,<\/strong> which can be slightly sweet and sometimes a little sour.<\/em> The consistency is usually thinner than that of oat or soy milk, which makes it less suitable for classic milk foam. However, there are also special barista editions that are a little creamier and froth better. <em><strong>Almond milk<\/strong> is particularly suitable for <strong>drip coffee<\/strong> or as a special accent in <strong>lattes<\/strong>.<\/em> The nutty aroma goes very well with lightly roasted Arabica beans.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-39863d7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"39863d7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Rice milk.<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-aa93c17 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"aa93c17\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><em><strong>The sweetest of the common plant milks.<\/strong> <\/em>Its taste is mild, a little watery and reminiscent of rice <em>(no wonder).<\/em> As it is very thin, it doesn&#8217;t work very well for frothing &#8211; <em>so <strong>cappuccinos<\/strong> or <strong>lattes<\/strong> don&#8217;t make much sense with rice milk. I would rather use it in sweet coffee specialties such as <strong>iced coffee<\/strong>.<\/em> There it gives the coffee a pleasant sweetness without weighing it down with creaminess. <em><strong>Rice milk<\/strong> is also a good alternative for coffee fans with nut or soy allergies.<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-237629c elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"237629c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Coconut milk.<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1f4da40 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1f4da40\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><em><strong>I&#8217;ll say it straight away:<\/strong> <\/em>It&#8217;s not really my thing. Coconut milk is extremely dominant and has no place in coffee for a coffee purist like me. <em><strong>Or in other words:<\/strong><\/em> It turns your coffee into something completely different, a <em><strong>\u201ctropical latte\u201d<\/strong><\/em> for example. In that case, I would choose a rather fruity coffee that goes well with the exotic coconut flavor and also harmonizes with spices such as turmeric or ginger.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c0afd90 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"c0afd90\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Hazelnut and cashew milk.<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1d0bc51 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1d0bc51\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><em><strong>It&#8217;s not hard to imagine that the nut varieties<\/strong> among the vegan milk alternatives also taste particularly nutty.<\/em> Not necessarily something for purists, but interesting in terms of taste. You can also create a light milk foam with them. <em><strong>As for the coffees:<\/strong> <\/em>They should be rather strong, with a tendency towards nutty notes, such as our Demeter espresso from Peru. However, as a single origin, it might even be a little too precious for that. So perhaps, not for every day.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2fef411 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"2fef411\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Pea milk.<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2bb4b36 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2bb4b36\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><em><strong>It tastes rather neutral to slightly earthy,<\/strong> which harmonizes surprisingly well with the coffee flavors.<\/em> I find its high protein content and creamy texture particularly convincing. The foam is fine-pored and stable, ideal for cappuccinos and the like.
